Dr. Keith J. Edwards is a Professor of Psychology in the Rosemead School of Psychology at Biola University. He holds a PhD in quantitative methods from New Mexico State University and a PhD in clinical and social psychology from the University of Southern California. Dr. Edwards’ primary clinical interests are marital and individual therapy using cognitive-experiential approaches. His research interests are primarily in the psychology of religion and focus on the assessment and development of spiritual health. He has held prior faculty positions at Rutgers University and Johns Hopkins University.

Course Description:

This course will provide an introduction to the theory and practice of Emotion Focused Therapy for Individuals and described in text books and articles by Dr. Leslie Greenberg on EFT. The presentation will summarize the basic theoretical tenets of the EFT approach, a description of four central intervention techniques of empathic exploration, focusing on a felt sense, two-chair dialogue, and empty chair dialogue. All of these techniques and their theoretical bases are thoroughly explained in the textbook, Learning Emotionally Focused Therapy, by Elliot, Greenberg, and Goldberg (APA).

Learning Objectives:

  1. Attendees will be able to identify the four basic assumptions of EFT.
  2. Attendees will be able to describe five varieties of empathy.
  3. Attendees will be able describe the purpose of focusing.
  4. Attendees will be able to identify the purpose of two-chair dialogue.
  5. Attendees will be able to describe the purpose of the empty-chair technique.
